In a two set sweep, Freshman Volleyball crushed the McNeil Mavericks on Tuesday, Sept. 9, with a score of 2-0. The Warriors took a considerable lead through both sets, allowing them to cruise to a quick win.
While the first set began with a three point disadvantage, Westwood quickly focused and answered back with three points of their own to even the score. From there on, the Warriors stayed fired up, and the point gap only continued to widen. Quick defensive reads led to clean digs from the back row, giving setters a chance to run smooth plays at the net. Layla Guerra ‘29 and Aahana Desai ‘29 teamed up to close out a long rally with a set to a powerful kill that brought the crowd to its feet. Consistent serves from Sloane Martin ‘29 built up the Lady Warriors’ confidence, and their energy stayed high as every rally pushed them closer to the set victory, securing it 25-16.
“I [really] wanted to win that set,” Desai said. “I wanted to prove that we are a really good team.”
Entering the second set with great momentum rolling in, the Warriors worked to continue setting up calculated plays. The Mavericks, hungry to strike back, secured the first point of the set yet again. However, Westwood quickly got possession back and kept it for eight consecutive points thanks to strong serves from Daisy Segura ‘29. The Warriors’ dominance left little room for McNeil to recover. Tight defense from Guerra and a sharp dig from Emme Sims ‘29 allowed Westwood to control the pace and keep the Mavericks from gaining possession. The Lady Warriors’ confidence only grew as clean passes and consistent serves of power and placement shut down any chance of McNeil’s comeback. Westwood closed the set 25-7, sealing the sweep and game in Westwood’s takeover.
“Hearing the crowd cheer for us [is the most satisfying part],” Guerra said. “We’ve been working on serve receives, [and that really paid off today].”
The Warriors look to continue the winning streak at their next matchup against the Round Rock Dragons on Friday, Sept. 12.
