Settling the Rory Gilmore Boyfriend Debate https://westwoodhorizon.com/2025/09/team-jess-dean-or-logan-settling-the-rory-gilmore-boyfriend-debate/ https://westwoodhorizon.com/2025/09/team-jess-dean-or-logan-settling-the-rory-gilmore-boyfriend-debate/#respond Sat, 06 Sep 2025 23:43:46 +0000 https://westwoodhorizon.com/?p=58866 As summer comes to an end and the “ber” months begin, the Gilmore Girls are defrosting. As we all know, Rory Gilmore has been through plenty of turbulent phases, from Chilton to Yale to getting together with her married ex-boyfriend. Her taste in men throughout the years has definitely well… changed. Although she was seen as loyal and innocent at Star’s Hollow High I think Yale, that unfortunate haircut, and her academic downfall really took it out of her. I mean she used to be so in love and loveable until she was forgetting to break up with men, and going after men who were in relationships.

  1. Teen Jess Mariano

Teen Jess has to be first on the podium. When Rory was falling apart, rather than telling her it was okay, Jess fought for her future. Importantly, he was not only a great boyfriend to Rory, but a wonderful friend. After Rory moved in with her grandparents, rather than shielding her from consequences, Jess showed his maturity in relationships by giving her a reality check about how stupid she was for dropping out of Yale.  Although Jess was initially presented as some bad boy, I do believe this kept Rory on her toes — and in a way, in line. Loreali was right about the initial judging though, the smoking and drinking is not okay. From first glance, Jess was certainly not the best guy, however, he is smart, witty and quick-to-play when it comes to Rory’s comments. This is reasonably better compared to Dean, who was lost all the time. Jess, although an imperfect, complex character, he was perfect for Rory. He communicated well and called her out on things that went against his boundaries.

  1. Teen Dean Forester

As a teenager, Dean was a pretty decent boyfriend. I will admit, his opinions on Donna Reed were unfortunate, but overall he  was a good boyfriend (taking into account he was just a teenager). First off, he built her a car, and a classic car at that. Dean was able to set their differences aside, by going to dances with her. For a boy who was very uncomfortable with those situations, showing up for Rory like that was amazing. Not many teenage boys would wear a suit with tails and gloves to escort a lady. Although Dean had been put through so much, he was nothing but kind and respectful to Rory and her mother. I will say, I didn’t appreciate that Rory felt the need to change for him and hide things from him in fear of fighting. It’s one thing to not like confrontation, but keeping secrets rather than communicating is just wrong.  However, in the end, I am proud of them for reconciling as friends before she attended Yale as it was a mature thing to do — especially since they were a part of each other’s lives for so long.

  1. Adult Jess Mariano

As the ultimate Jess lover, obviously, adult Jess has to be high up on my podium. He grew up to be an amazingly smart and mature man that still cared for Rory so much. I appreciate that Rory went to Jess with her problems as she knew that he would understand her. I mean, Jess even said “I know you better than anyone.” Her later going to him proves that. Later, when Jess reappears, in the revival series Gilmore Girls: A Year in The Life, rather than being together, Rory and Jess were adults with mutual respect for one another. Rory was struggling in her life as a journalist and Jess was there for her to lean on. Even though lots of fans have mentioned the fact that they would love Rory and Jess to continue their relationship, Jess still considers Rory as “too good” for him, making it impossible for them to rekindle their love.

  1. College Logan Huntzberger

In college, Logan was a decent boyfriend. It’s often said that Logan is the boyfriend that Rory loved most. While he did bring out a good side to Rory,I have to say I didn’t appreciate some of the other qualities in  Rory he brought out; she stole a boat when she was with him, and got arrested. I will never understand the hype around Logan because he truly did cause Rory to suffer. She went through numerous crises and Logan was no help whatsoever. I get that he is a businessman, but Rory was his partner and he should have been there for her.

  1. Post-College Paul

Paul, known only for his brief appearance, and often deemed the forgotten boyfriend of Rory Gilmore. Throughout the series, Rory would often mention the mental note of having to break up with Paul. This all happened while she was in an affair with Logan. Loreali made her opinions clear, and even called Rory out about her disloyal decisions. Honestly though there is nothing to say about Paul though due to him simply not being in the series very long. To put it into perspective, we don’t even know his last name.

  1. Post-College Logan Huntzberger

Tied for the last places are adults Logan and Dean. Maybe I’m just a hater, but I really do feel that Logan is awful. He was in a deeply-committed existing relationship when he reconnected with Rory — even if it was just with a fiance and not a wife, an affair like that is a major encroachment. The fact that he not only went out with Rory but ended up getting her pregnant is just not okay. He cheated.  Then, he proceeded to ruin Rory’s life as well as his fiance’s.

  1. Adult Dean Forester

I can say with full confidence that Dean grew up to be a terrible man.  After he and Rory broke up officially, Dean moved on to Lindsey. I strongly believe that if Rory had just backed off once she went to Yale, and not tried to be friends with Dean after their two year relationship, Lindsey would not have been cheated on. So in reality, this relationship soured because of both Dean and Rory. However, I will say I am proud of Rory for not going to the wedding and just standing by –especially after a drunk Dean confessed his love for her. Although Rory didn’t know about the drunk confession, the fact that she still went after a married man was upsetting. Again, Loreali made her opinions clear by emphasizing: “He’s not your Dean, he’s Lindsey’s Dean,” which only made Rory more upset and distraught, which was an ultimate point of embarrassment for her.

Take a Look in a Book with Ms. KatieAnn Prescott https://westwoodhorizon.com/2025/08/take-a-look-in-a-book-with-ms-katieann-prescott/ https://westwoodhorizon.com/2025/08/take-a-look-in-a-book-with-ms-katieann-prescott/#respond Fri, 29 Aug 2025 00:21:43 +0000 https://westwoodhorizon.com/?p=58698 Walking into the library, the shelves are filled with fantasy worlds, cultural identity, scientific notations, and famous heroes we look up to today. The books, although different, are all in the same place as one another, striving to entice every student and teacher that walks by. Librarian KatieAnn Prescott brightens the room with her welcoming personality, willing to help every person she can.

Originally from a small city just outside of Houston, Texas called Magnolia, Ms. Prescott came to Austin, Texas after attending Texas State University, where she majored in English and later received her teaching degree.

“I got my teaching degree and then I taught English for 12 years in Leander ISD,” Ms. Prescott said. “I just wanted to focus specifically on the reading aspect of being an English teacher [and] just encouraging kids to find their interests and to see themselves reflected in the stories on the page.”

During Poetry Playground, students were tasked with making poems using only book titles. This practice helped the students learn to work with catching phrases to make their own piece of poetry. (Charly Obermiller)

Wanting to share her love of reading, Ms. Prescott applied to get her master’s degree in library science. Before she took any of her classes, however, she began a job as a librarian at Liberty Hill Middle School. Displaying strength and persistence, she not only attended school regularly but also worked full-time, proving that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

“It was a really good opportunity to practice some of the same things that I was learning in my master’s degree program,” Ms. Prescott said. “I could basically use the school as kind of a guinea pig for what I was doing in school.”

Similar to many students, Ms. Prescott initially had no intention of following in her family’s footsteps. However, she was always drawn to books, holding a special place in her heart for them. Ultimately, Ms. Prescott was led to her calling of being a librarian.

“I never thought that I would be a librarian — that was not in my career plans,” Ms. Prescott said. “My great aunt was a librarian, and I have a cousin who is also a librarian. So, I’m guessing it runs in the family.”

Checking their work, Librarian KatieAnn Prescott observes as pairs of students use magnets to create poetry. Creating both simple and complex poems, students had 15 minutes to make as much poetry as they could. (Charly Obermiller)

Ms. Prescott’s experience teaching has aided her greatly in the library. For instance Ms. Prescott helped run Poetry Playground to help students better understand poetry. She has noticed how teachers often ask her for certain books they need for classes. Without hesitation, Ms. Prescott aims to be there and lend a helping hand.

“The other part about being a librarian that’s really great is being a jack of all trades,” Ms. Prescott said. “I feel like any time a teacher comes to us and says, ‘I have this crazy idea, here’s what I want to do’ and they have no way to implement it, a librarian can be like, ‘Well, that’s easy! We can make that happen.’ That’s the fantastic part. You get to work with a bunch of other teachers. You get to teach math and science and social studies and really support [students and faculty] on a campus level.“

Outside of the library, Ms. Prescott lives on three and a half acres of land with her dogs, husband, bees that she harvests honey from, and the occasional raccoon.

“This morning, I literally turned on the lights outside and there was a raccoon that was hanging out at the bird feeder,” Ms. Prescott said. “He just stared at me, and he didn’t move. He just was like, ‘I’m hungry, I’m doing my thing over here’.”

As a bibliophile, Ms. Prescott strives to connect with students on a deeper level by researching what students are reading. This helps create bonds and helps create a safe space for students.

“A series that I’ve really loved recently was Sunrise on the Reaping, Haymitch’s story, from [the series] The Hunger Games,” Ms. Prescott said. “Books are a really good way to connect with kids because even though [The] Hunger Games came out many years ago, kids are still reading it. It’s still relevant. I think that’s an easy segue into talking to kids about books.”

Ultimately Ms. Prescott is very excited to be here at Westwood and can’t wait to see how the new environment will challenge her. She is honored to be the school’s librarian.

“I feel like I found a gem, as far as being a part of this community,” Ms. Prescott said.

Back on the Green With ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ https://westwoodhorizon.com/2025/08/back-on-the-green-with-happy-gilmore-2/ https://westwoodhorizon.com/2025/08/back-on-the-green-with-happy-gilmore-2/#respond Sun, 24 Aug 2025 23:06:36 +0000 https://westwoodhorizon.com/?p=58651 With his anger issues almost in check, Happy Gilmore and his mentor Chubbs prepare to win the Tour Championship. With Happy’s win on the line he stresses to hit the golf ball into the hole, only three feet away. His mentor Chubbs in a calm and collected manner repeats… “All you have to do is tap it in. Just tap it in. Just tap it in. Just tap it in. Give it a little tappy. Tap, tap, tap-a-roo.”

Any fan of golf, or Adam Sandler for that matter, would recall this iconic line from Happy Gilmore. After a long and painful 30 years, Sandler came back as Happy , still rocking the Bruins jersey and a hockey stick putter. This time though, Happy is not fighting for money for his grandma’s house, he’s fighting for his daughter to go to dance school in France. Instead of competing against his nemesis, Shooter McGavin, he competes and prepares to destroy a team, called Maxi League, the so-called “future of golf.”

One of the best parts of the film was the cameos. Not only was his family incorporated into the movie, but stars like Travis Kelce, Cameron Boyce, Eminem, Rory Mcilroy, and Bad Bunny were as well. These cameos made the movie a great watch and honestly kept the viewers on their feet. Appearances by Guy Fieri and Steve Buscemi were a funny addition to the film.

Fans appreciate the cast and Happy Madison productions coming together again to create a movie for the next generation to enjoy. Sandler was able to contact his friends and co-stars from Saturday Night Live (SNL) and get them to come together for the film. The fact that Sandler was able to get everyone back one last time for the movie was really appreciated. Parents grew up with Happy Gilmore and now this generation is growing up with it too.

The film has varying similarities and differences from its predecessor. Sandler would have flashbacks going back to his time as a world class golfer, moments that made the movie nostalgic for parents. Ben Stiller returned to pick on Happy, not just his grandma, and Julie Bowen reprised her role as Happy’s wife; still keeping him calm in his happy place. The modern twist on the film made it more relatable for the next generation, adding moments with video games as well as references to social media apps like TikTok. It was refreshing seeing Happy grow old with us,showing the growth of Happy Gilmore as a father and as a character.

The movie does an excellent job in showing the importance of family and the importance of hard work. When we see Happy in the first film he comes off as very immature, but the second film highlighted his growth as a character and made the aging seem less forced. Some parts never changed though. Although he’s older now his love for the Bruins never died; he still has the team posters and even put his sons into hockey mirroring him as a person. These special attentions to detail helped the sequel feel like a continuation of the first film rather than a different movie.

All in all, this was a fantastic sequel that really showed how fun golf can be and it shows the talent of the Sandler family. Happy came from a broken hockey dream and then became a golf star. Ultimately, it reminds people that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
